Our chapter meets once a week for classes in Dearborn County, Indiana. We offer 3.5 hours of class time, and 30 minutes for a lunch break. Classes are each week for three weeks at a time. We then have a week off when a field trip option is usually offered. We begin each year in mid-August. Classes finish about the second week of May followed by a field day and spring showcase.
A unique component for our community is that our weekly chapter days include a 30-minute lunch period for all our scholars and volunteers. We have found lunch allows scholars to engage in conversation and play, to use up some extra energy, and to build friendships. It also allows our upper level scholars to become familiar with their peers, making their in-class dialogue easier.

We average about 20 families from across Southeast Indiana as well as the Tri-State area and greater Cincinnati. Catholic Schoolhouse chapters are all-volunteer. Our families serve in tutoring, leadership, and other volunteering roles. We are also supported by local parish communities that help us through facility usage, fundraising activities, special events and Masses, promotion, and board member involvement.
Thanks to the energy, enthusiasm, and camaraderie of everyone, volunteering becomes an enjoyable time spent together caring for our community.
Some roles where adults share their talents include:
Chapter Coordinators – Individuals focus on a specific area of the chapter programming. Led by our chapter director, team members focus on areas such finance, administration, supply, class and tutor programming, facility care, field trip planning, and community events.
Tutors – Adult volunteers that present activities focused on learning the memory work each week are called, “tutors”. Tutors may create worksheets or brief activities for one or a few subjects, to one or a few age levels. This all depends on the subject and needs of scholars. Our chapter likes to offer co-tutoring opportunities so that adult volunteers have fewer subjects to prep activities for, and can enjoy more flexibility on chapter days. Planning is made simple by using the CSH tour guide book, online community resources, or some pre-written lesson guides.
Other service – Every family offers end-of-day clean-up time on a three-week rotation. Adult volunteers attend four meetings a year to prepare for each quarter and help prep class materials. And families offer time serving at two annual community breakfasts to raise funds for our chapter.
Our chapter welcomes infants and students from pre-grammar to high school levels. Our Upper Levels (junior high and high school) programs are available when we receive enough registrations from students at that level. The nursery allows moms to serve in class, or other roles during the chapter days while knowing their babies and toddlers are safely cared for in the same facility as them.
By including lunch, we are able to begin our day a little later, giving our families more time in the morning, and avoiding rush hour traffic. There is also less rush for families to get home and quickly prepare lunch for their children. Additionally, our nursery strives to have a quiet period, with lights out, for any napping youngsters. Our moms with infants in attendance still enjoy this schedule design.
Due to CSH structure, where all members have an adult volunteer at chapter days, we are not a “drop-off” program. Students cannot attend without the parent or adult member for their family. It would not be possible for us to provide a quality environment if we had students attending without their parent volunteer. If a parent should need to remain home with a sick child, or for their own needs, we ask that the rest of their children stay home too.
We especially have fun celebrating our scholars, building friendships, and exploring new ways to learn memory work material throughout the surrounding community.
We offer mom nights out, Advent tradition, showcases, an annual field day, field trips, and in-class feast day celebrations.
